HORIYOSHI Ⅲ
In the world of tattooing, where hereditary succession is strong, Horiyoshi III was exceptionally chosen by the second-generation HORIYOSHI, a position usually reserved for a direct son. For him, tattooing isn't about being good or bad but about expressing fantasy and legends. He brings to life non-existent beings like Sun Wukong (Monkey King) and dragons. Adhering to such beliefs, shortly after assuming his title, Horiyoshi III attracted the attention of the industry and became a legendary tattoo artist frequented by world-famous celebrities.
Now, at the age of 80, he has retired from tattooing. However, his deep understanding of human beauty and his ability to create masterpieces without preliminary sketches are considered works of art. In 2021, he received the Tokugawa Cultural Award. His art pieces, like the 'Hundred Demons' and 'Dragon Heart,' are so popular worldwide that exhibitions are held, and his art books become collector's items. Currently, he holds the honorary title of 'Niō' and spends his limited time producing original art.
